BRC Updates

8-25-10 - The BRC participates in the Temple Health Fair

Colette Acker, BRC Director spent the afternoon at the Temple University Hospital Health Fair located on the Episcopal Campus.  This was a perfect opportunity to increase awareness of the importance of breastfeeding for moms and babies.

7-29-10 - BRC President, Executive Director and Director of Development head to Texas!

The BRC Board of Directors wants the BRC staff to be THE resource for breastfeeding families and healthcare professionals.  In order to keep the staff up to date on their breastfeeding knowlege, a few attended this year's ILCA conference.  ILCA is the professional association for lactation consultants or IBCLCs.  Their mission is to advance the profession of lactation consulting worldwide through leadership, advocacy, professional development, and research.  This year's ILCA conference was held in San Antonio, Texas.  Five days of confernce information left little time for fun, but the BRC crew managed one evening out to the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio!

Almost 1,000 attendees at the ILCA        Janice and Colette meet Tom Hale, PhD!!

Welcome Liz Brooks, JD, IBCLC

The staff at the BRC was getting pretty overwhelmed on Fridays.  Because we're closed on weekends, we get a lot of panicked calls on Fridays.  We like to schedule moms the day or the day after they call.  Most moms don't want to wait until Monday for an appointment if they call on Friday.  Therefore, we hired Liz Brooks to help us on Friday afternoons.  Liz has been a lactation consultant in the area for 13 years.  She has experience in both hospital and post-discharge lactation work.  She's not new to lactation, but she's new to the BRC!  Thanks for joining us, Liz!

More Baby Bundles....

The BRC was double blessed this year by the Girl Scouts.  Troop 71273, a Senior Cadette troop which meet at St. Paul’s in Glenside supplied us with more Baby Bundles!  These boxes are loaded with diapers, clothes, wipes and many other baby needs!  They also gave us a box full of handmade baby blankets to accompany the boxes.  Thanks to Troop 71273 for all their hard work!  Our mothers are thrilled!

Baby Bundles are Back!

Baby Bundles are packages of new baby items created by Girl Scouts that will be distributed to needy mothers and infants through local agencies. We are lucky to have the Brownie Troop 7112 offer the bundles to the BRC.  This is the second year we’ve been chosen to participate.  There are 16 girls in Troop 7112 and they all are second graders from Copper Beech Elementary.  The bags are adorable and are filled with great products like diapers, onesies, bibs, and more.   The girls obviously worked hard organizing 24 bags for us.  All mothers who come to the BRC and fall on our sliding scale of payment receive one.  Thank you Troop 7112!

Malakye, age two, is carrying the Baby Bundle for his family!
He visited us with his mom, dad, and new baby brother, Logan!

Recent Grants

Green Tree Community Health Foundation

BRC receives $15,000 grant from Green Tree Community Health Foundation

The BRC thanks Green Tree Community Health Foundation for its steadfast commitment to breastfeeding families in the Philadelphia Area. In tough economic times, when the market decline has forced many foundations reduce financial support to non-profit organizations, Green Tree has renewed their commitment to keeping the BRC running with a $15,000 grant for General Operating Expenses.  A community health advocate, the Green Tree Community Health Foundation is a not-for-profit public charity that identifies areas of vulnerability in the communities of Northwest Philadelphia and Eastern Montgomery County and provides funding to organizations whose work addresses these needs. The foundation seeks to have a positive impact on current and emerging health issues and risks, empowering residents to access health services and value, embrace and maintain their health.

Enon Community Reinvestment Ministry

Enon Community Reinvestment Ministry offers financial support to worthy non-profits in the greater Philadelphia Community. Enon is especially interested in supporting programs that provide access to healthcare and those designed to reduce the risk of disease, making the BRC’s mission a perfect fit. Enon generously granted $5,000 to the Holly Fund to subsidize lactation care for families whose income level falls with our sliding scale of payment. These grant funds will allow many uninsured or underinsured families access to quality lactation care at an affordable cost.
