Staff
Colette M. Acker, BS, IBCLC
Colette, a mother of three beautiful breastfed children, began
her career in lactation as a volunteer counselor with the
Nursing Mothers Advisory Council in 1993. Her interest soon
became a passion, and Colette studied to become an International
Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). In addition
to teaching expectant families about breastfeeding and training
experienced mothers to become breastfeeding counselors, Colette
enjoys working one on one with mothers and babies. Mothers
feel empowered and successful as Colette helps them to achieve
their goals.
Janice McPhelin – Director of Development
Janice McPhelin is the Director of Development. As is true of most BRC employees, Janice wears many hats. She is a Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and works with mothers at our center. In addition to her excellent clinical skills for resolving breastfeeding concerns, she is also experienced in grant writing. Since Janice joined us, the BRC has obtained significant grant funding, which allows us to keep our programs available.
Janice has a degree in Business Communications, and after nursing her two sons, Matthew and Liam, she found that her passion was for promoting breastfeeding and helping others to breastfeed well. She became certified as a counselor with Nursing Mothers Advisory Council and focused on her studies to qualify to sit for the board certification exam. After completing a clinical internship program at the BRC, she was officially board certified earlier this year.

Nancy Osborne – Office Manager
When you call or come into the BRC, you’ll most likely
be greeted by Nancy, the office manager. Nancy, who the BRC
director describes as, “the glue that holds the BRC
together” expertly manages all the tasks of the office.
In her time at the BRC she has gained great knowledge in the
area of breastpumps and other breastfeeding products. Amongst
her many talents, she’s also a certified bra fitter!

Jen McClure – Group Meeting Coordinator
Another friendly face you might encounter at the BRC is Jen McClure. Jen works part-time as our class/support group meeting coordinator and helps out with the day to day details of running the office. She is also an experienced breastfeeding counselor. She has been very active in the Abington Nursing Mother’s Advisory Council for the last 5+ years as co-coordinator and in counseling moms who call the breastfeeding helpline in need of breastfeeding advice. She does lactation rounds for us at Holy Redeemer Hospital and is in the process of training and studying to become a professional lactation consultant (IBCLC). She has a fabulous husband and three fabulous breastfed children, Liah, Mya and Daniel. If you have any ideas for classes that might interest new families, give us a call and ask for Jen!

Grant Funding 2009
BRC receives $15,000 grant from Green Tree Community Health Foundation

The BRC thanks Green Tree Community Health Foundation for its steadfast commitment to breastfeeding families in the Philadelphia Area. In tough economic times, when the market decline has forced many foundations reduce financial support to non-profit organizations, Green Tree has renewed their commitment to keeping the BRC running with a $15,000 grant for General Operating Expenses.
A community health advocate, the Green Tree Community Health Foundation is a not-for-profit public charity that identifies areas of vulnerability in the communities of Northwest Philadelphia and Eastern Montgomery County and provides funding to organizations whose work addresses these needs. The foundation seeks to have a positive impact on current and emerging health issues and risks, empowering residents to access health services and value, embrace and maintain their health.
Enon Community Reinvestment Ministry generously granted $5,000 to the Holly Fund to subsidize lactation care for families whose income level falls with our sliding scale of payment. These grant funds will allow many uninsured or underinsured families access to quality lactation care at an affordable cost.
Enon offers financial support to worthy non-profits in the greater Philadelphia Community. Enon is especially interested in supporting programs that provide access to healthcare and those designed to reduce the risk of disease, making the BRC’s mission a perfect fit.

The Hellendall Family Foundation continued their ongoing support of the BRC with a grant in the amount of $1,000.00. They ask that these funds be used to make the community a better place for everyone.
The Tornambe Family Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation granted the BRC $750.00 for general operating support. These funds are so important for keeping the building running and doors open to families who need our help.

The BRC Wins $40,000 Award!
